Aviation Round-Up

Working within the aviation environment requires careful planning and coordination with multiple stakeholders. Special attention must be paid to maintaining airside/landside separation, complying with airport security requirements and assuring that construction has no impact upon existing operations. Willmeng’s team of builders is well-suited to working in such environments and has enjoyed recent success on a variety of projects at both Sky Harbor International Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

American Airlines

Beginning in 2016 Willmeng has been performing on-call worked with American Airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor. The seven projects completed as part of this program include new office space on the mezzanine level of Terminal 4, N2 concourse, and a new Premium Services office in the N3 concourse of Terminal 4. All of this work was completed within and around an active terminal without any disruptions to American’s or Sky Harbor’s ongoing operations.

Phoenix Sky Harbor

In 2017, Willmeng began work on 4,000 square feet of retail space in Terminal 4 for Avila Retail. Four separate spaces were completed in early 2018 within a fully operational terminal. Among these stores are the Indigenous and Mosaic shops, which feature Native American arts, crafts and jewelry in a gallery-like setting.

In 2018, Willmeng commenced additional retail work on the second phase of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Terminal 3 Modernization Program, including Indigenous and Mosaic, Travel Outfitters and Sugarfina. Built for Stellar Partners, the stores were completed in early 2019 in alignment with Terminal 3’s recent grand opening. Within this 3,400-square-foot program, the Indigenous and Mosaic shops were built under a design-build delivery method.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway

Currently under construction, Able Engineering Expansion at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is a 39,000-square-foot expansion to an existing aircraft parts fabrication and manufacturing facility. This tilt-up concrete panel project will add on to an existing operational facility, directly adjacent to the active airfield. Working with very little staging area, the tilt-up concrete panels are being cast directly on the slab of the new expansion. Although this work is taking place landside, the work included relocating airside/landside secured fencing to accommodate new construction.

Willmeng is also working on 5,500 square feet of renovation to the exterior and interior of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Aviation Services Building. This work will upgrade and modernize the lounge and customer service areas for general aviation patrons, providing spaces with contemporary and hospitable finishes. Improvements are also being made to the flight planning room, conference room and pilot’s lounge. The building is occupied by a restaurant, United States Customs and Border Protection offices, a rental car agency, and other businesses and airport functions such as training and badging. As the 24/7 facility requires continuous operation during construction, the work is being conducted in carefully coordinated phases, further complicated by asbestos abatement of flooring and flooring mastic.
