[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Last December, Willmeng Construction broke ground on a new $15.2 million public charter school for BASIS in San Antonio, Tex., which is scheduled to open in time for the first day of school on September 4.

Located at 4114 Lockhill-Selma Road, the new ground up, two-story, 64,400-square-foot school will house students in the 5-12 grades, and will be the first secondary school for BASIS located in the Shavano Park community.

Designed by Orcutt-Winslow and constructed by Willmeng, the building will feature first floor office and administration space, science labs, classrooms, as well as music and drama rooms. The second floor will primarily consist of classrooms for art and education. Just outside the first floor multi-purpose room, a basketball court and artificial turf field are being installed.

Willmeng’s Project Manager Jason Alvarado said everyone involved found chemistry from the beginning of the project and work well together. “We knew that it would be a task to find the right people to help us build a great project, especially when Willmeng is an AZ-based general contractor stepping into Texas,” he explained. “The interest we gained from subcontractors in participating on this project was very positive and well-received.”

Alvarado attributes the project’s successful construction so far to how the entire teamed worked together to tackle any issues that arose, which also included Chermack Consulting Group and Carhuff-Cueva. “The construction industry is faced with many challenges, including resource shortages, material procurement and producing quality work, but we seem to have found the right fits for the project and are very fortunate to have done so,” Alvarado added.

The project will be completed by the start of school on September 4. The gymnasium component will be completed in October. Meanwhile, Willmeng continues construction on the expansion of BASIS Flagstaff, a nationally ranked K-12 charter school, located at 1700 N. Gemini Road in Flagstaff.
