On Friday, Sept. 30, Willmeng Construction won the NON-RESIDENTIAL CITATION AWARD at the 31st Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards Banquet. Willmeng won for their Avondale Fire Station 175 project.
This was Avondale, Arizona’s fifth fire station and is nicknamed “The Oasis”. The station is in the middle of the city at 12495 W. Van Buren to fill a response gap while providing call relief to Avondale’s four other stations.
The construction for the $12.4 million, 17,000-square-foot facility started in April 2021 and concluded in February 2022. The station includes three bays, office space, 12 dorm rooms, lockers for 36 people, a full kitchen, dining room, laundry facilities, training area, exercise room, and spaces for public service outreach program.
“This is what a fire station should look like – masonry and permanent,” said the Jury. “The iconic use of the color blockwork against the judiciously placed background created a balance and overall rhythm of the project.”
Willmeng had to overcome many challenges to meet the deadline and be on budget. Covid caused staff shortages, materials being delayed, and prices being changed.
In September 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Administration awarded Avondale with a $3 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant to hire 14 new firefighter positions.
The 31st Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards hosted by the AZ Masonry Council included over 400 industry members and fifteen projects were recognized for their outstanding masonry design, workmanship, and creativity with the use of brick, block and/or stone.
