It is officially the best in the world! The Mesa Gateway Library in Arizona has just been named the 2026 Public Library of the Year by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and James Bennett.
Beating out 19 international entries across nine countries, this stunning community hub proves that libraries are no longer just quiet rooms filled with dusty books—they are dynamic, forward-thinking spaces for connection and innovation.
Why It Won
Announced at the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Busan, South Korea, the award recognized Gateway Library for setting a new international benchmark in accessibility, sustainability, and user experience.
Here is what makes this 28,000-square-foot facility a true standout:
- The “Open Market” Concept: The library features a breathtaking open-layout design meant to resemble a bustling public market underneath a protective canopy.
- Stunning Architecture: A soaring, folded wood ceiling extends from the exterior patio directly into the building, seamlessly connecting the interior with the beautiful Arizona desert landscape.
- Next-Gen Features: The library is equipped with a THINKspot collaborative makerspace, a digital public art wall, and automated technology (they are even trialing a robot named “Romy” to help patrons navigate!).
- Community First: It brings together dedicated areas for teens, adults, and children, while also incorporating design elements specifically crafted to support neurodiverse individuals.
A Hometown Victory
The project represents a massive milestone for Mesa, as it is the city’s first new public library in over 30 years. The vision was brought to life through a powerful collaboration: it was designed by the visionary team at Arizona-based Richärd Kennedy Architects and built by Willmeng Construction.
“We take our role very seriously when it comes to public projects like this,” noted Willmeng CEO James Murphy. “We want to be good stewards of the City’s resources and also create a facility that reflects the character of the community and is a space that will be utilized and shared for many years to come”.
If you find yourself in the Southeast Mesa area, the Gateway Library is a must-visit destination to see world-class architecture and community design in action.
